Pro/Con Cookies

February 9, 2010

Question of the day: How do you get the entire debate team to your house for an emergency research/study session?

Answer: Pro/Con Cookies, of course.

This time, the Curious Gastronome has abandoned all hope of healthiness–sometimes, life calls for butter. And sugar. And chocolate.

This week, the debate team leaves for Cambridge, Massachusetts, where we will be participating in a national debate tournament at Harvard University. Though it’s a fantastic opportunity to check out the national competition and get some high quality, competitive rounds in, our annual trip east more represents a team bonding experience than anything else. While we all work very hard at debate, we’re hardly a national-caliber team due to the fact that we simply lack the resources that all the nationally-competitive teams have. We do our best, though–our coaches are some of the most dedicated teachers at school, and we have a team comprised of smart, hard working, incredible individuals. We are such a diverse group of kids, but we find commonality in our shared love of Forensics. The best part? We all love each other. And we all love food.

Tonight, over a plate of delicious chocolate chip cookies, the Public Forum team constructed argument blocks, which are essentially compilations of evidence, analysis, and rhetoric used to argue against or for a specific point. We bounced ideas off of each other like ping pong balls as we smoothly flowed from “affirmative” to “negative” and back again. This month’s resolution? “Resolved: That organized political lobbying does more harm than good in the United States.”

The great thing about debate is that there are always two sides to every argument. So here, in celebration of debate and open-mindedness, I give you Pro/Con cookies! Complete with–well–their pros and cons.

Pros:

- Good for the soul

- They are absolutely delicious

Cons:

- Gone faster than you can say, “How does campaign finance reform affect modern lobbying?”

Unfortunately, however, I’ll have to keep you waiting for the recipe. I’ve got some arguments to block out! :) Check back here around Wednesday for some goodness.
